Exclusive, one word from me that represents Quentin Tarantino's films. What I mean by exclusive is how the visual presentation of each film has its own characteristics. Starting from the plot of the story that breaks the way film is told in general, the shooting technique, to the level of violence in the film has its own characteristics. Even though Tarantino himself said that every shooting technique or story plot was only inspired and even duplicated from the films he watched, Tarantino's films still seemed to have a life of their own that was not found in other films. The 8 films he directed further strengthen that opinion. And now Quentin Tarantino is here with his 9th film titled Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Set in 1969 in the heyday of Hollywood, it really became an entertainment center for film or television. The film follows the 2 main characters who are the wheels of this film's story. Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) is an actor on the brink of career decline. Then there is Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) a stuntman who works for Rick Dalton and is very loyal to his employer. The audience will be invited to follow their days of doing activities in hollywood and bring them together the big characters or filmmakers of that year, such as Bruce Lee, Steve McQueen, Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate and even Charles Manson with his followers who rocked hollywood in that era.
Tarantino, as we all know, always gives a unique touch to his films, which he brings back through OUATIH. From dynamic camera movements, image colors to music. So for those who are watching Tarantino for the first time through this film, be prepared to have your patience level tested because the plot is very slow. Not enough with a very slow plot, throughout the film you will wonder where will the plot of the film take you? But that's Tarantino, always inserting diction and details into the characters that make it feel like reading a novel. Can't be blamed if some viewers can't enjoy this kind of storytelling style which makes it exclusive to other audiences,
Unlike previous Tarantino films which also use many characters and usually each character has a storyline that will have an influence at the end of the story. For OUATIH a lot of characters appear that simply don't have any essence if they aren't in the story. It seems Tarantino is looking to have a little fun with the audience, which is paid for by an ending that again makes the audience applaud the directors other than Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt who also provide a strong performance and chemistry in this film. Just make sure you know the background from which this film adaptation was appointed so that you can feel the extraordinary sensation at the end.
OUATIH can certainly give satisfaction to its fans and maybe some ordinary viewers who have never watched Tarantino's films before. How come you can't enjoy this movie? Well, as I said above, the film does feel exclusive.
