Recently, in an interview with The Korea Times , director Yeon Sang-ho revealed that the purpose of the Hellbound series is about humans themselves. “The most important message I want to convey through this work is about humanity and what it means to be human,” said Sang-ho. “Even though the series is set in Korea, I think the issues are very universal, such as life and death, sin and punishment, and so on. We all have this question as humans, so I think it helps the series resonate with global audiences."

Hellbound Season 1 ends with the South Korean public starting to suspect the true purpose of the supernatural figure, including suspecting the New Truth sect that considers the figure to be "God". At the end of Hellbound, a taxi driver tells Min Hye-jin (Kim Hyun-joo), “I don't know much about God, and I don't even care, But one thing I do know is that this world belongs to humans. And we have to solve our own problems.”

The closing message in the series is in line with the intention of the director, that as humans who often question about life and death, in the end, only ourselves can solve problems in the world.
