Several international stars have failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic with Sweden, Mohamed Salah with Egypt or Riyad Mahrez with Algeria.

There is not something for everyone at the World Cup. The play-offs that have been disputed this week have excluded several stars from the meeting in Qatar next winter. This is particularly the case of Mohamed Salah, eliminated with Egypt by Senegal (1-1, 3 tab 1) in the remake of the final of the African Cup of Nations. The Liverpool star, unhappy by missing his shot on goal, leaves Sadio Mané, his club teammate, to play in the World Cup.

The play-offs were also very painful for Riyad Mahrez's Algeria, who will miss a second consecutive World Cup after that of 2018. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen will also be absent after Nigeria's elimination against Ghana. The former Lille resident, however, obtained several opportunities, without managing to force the decision. Before the play-offs, the hens had already made some heavy victims like the Ivory Coast of Serge Aurier and Sébastien Haller.

Haaland also absent

In Europe, the dam between Poland and Sweden (2-0) went wrong for Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Entering the second period, the forties failed in his dream of playing a third and probably last World Cup after those of 2002 and 2006. The AC Milan player indicated that he would continue his international career but 2026 seems very far away . He will let Robert Lewandowski, his rival from a distance, try to shine on Qatari grounds with Poland. The play-offs also cost the Italy of Marco Verratti, Leonardo Bonucci or Gianluigi Donnarumma dearly, coming out in the semi-finals. Erling Haaland will also be absent since Norway did not come out of the pools.

Vidal, Sanchez and James on the hook

In South America, Colombia, 8th finalist in 2018, will also miss the World Cup. A blow for James Rodriguez. Chile failed in these qualifications, finishing in 7th place. Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez will therefore follow the competition in front of their television next winter.

At the end of this international break, 27 tickets out of 32 were allocated. Gareth Bale's Wales are waiting to find out their opponent who will be the winner of the Scotland-Ukraine match. In Concacaf, the United States and Mexico are on track to support Canada at the World Cup. Keylor Navas' Costa Rica is set to play a play-off against the winner of the match between New Zealand and the Solomon Islands.
