Lightyear has now been released and . since it's a Pixar movie, you might be expecting to see it on Disney+.
The three most recent Pixar movies – Soul, Luca and Turning Red – have skipped cinemas entirely to debut exclusively on the streaming service. It was mostly due to the market continuing to recover from Covid disruption, but cinemas were open.
Unlike those movies, Lightyear is being released exclusively in cinemas, marking the first Pixar movie since Onward in March 2020 to hit the big screen worldwide. (The other movies did get a theatrical release in countries where Disney+ wasn't available.)
It means that the cinema is the only place you can see the Toy Story spin-off for now, but it will eventually come to Disney+ – and we can roughly work out when that might be.
Since cinemas have reopened, Disney has . generally given their movies a 45-day exclusive theatrical window. Some movies, such as Encanto, have had a 30-day window, but the 45 days has been more common.
For instance, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released in cinemas on May 6 and will arrive on Disney+ on Wednesday, June 22, meaning a gap of 47 days from its theatrical release to streaming debut.
A similar 45-day window for Lightyear puts its Disney+ release around Sunday, July 31. A weekend release seems unlikely, so we'd expect it in that following week from Monday, August 1 onwards.
Equally, if Lightyear gets a shorter 30-day exclusive theatrical window (Disney hasn't confirmed either way yet), it could arrive on Disney+ around Saturday, July 16 or in that following week.
This is all speculation for now and it's likely that Disney won't confirm the release date until nearer the time. We didn't know for sure about Doctor Strange 2's Disney+ release until three weeks before its streaming bow.
